Frank SWEETITZ was born in Austria. His family immigrated to the USA during his childhood. He was a Pathfinder in the "Hq" Company, 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion. After the jump in southern France August 15th, 1944, he was killed by a gunshot wound to the head in the attack on the Castle La Napoule on August 21st, 1944.
Burl Jacob Knapp was born May 13th, 1922, in Edon, Williams County, Ohio. He entered the Army at Camp Custar, Michigan, October 16th, 1942. He first saw action in Sicily and participated to the Italian Campaign with the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion and was wounded on the Anzio beachead on february 16th, 1944. Ralph HIRALES was born in Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona, in 1920. In 1942, he lost his brother Felipe HIRALES, killed in action in the South Pacific. He was killed in action during the attack for Hill 84, castle hill near la Napoule. He is probably wounded on the 21st during the attack and died of wounds the 23rd of August.
John Newton APPERSON was born on November 21, 1906 in New Kent County, Virginia, in a farming community. In 1920, he join the John MArshall High School in Richmond, and after three years, he became a seed analyst with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. He married Katherine Ann LAWRENCE in 1928 and they had a daughter in 1933, Peggy Ann.
John HAY is born in Westchester County, New York. Serving in the 463rd Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, he is killed in action in Mandelieu la Napoule, August 23rd, 1944. The action in Mandelieu will cost many lives for the 509th PIB and 463rd PFAB troopers.
