Emmanuel, Antoine, Aimé RICARD alias "Manu" est né à Callas dans le Var le 13 mars 1897, de Jean Marius, chargé d'Octroi de profession et de Anna Pélagie ESCOUFFIER, couturière. Après l'école communale, la famille s'installe à Toulon où il apprend le métier de forgeron. Il est mobilisé le 09 janvier 1916 et est affecté au 2em régiment d'artillerie de montagne en octobre, au 83em régiment d'artillerie lourde en janvier 1917 et enfin au 3em régiment du génie ou il sera intoxiqué...
