Lincoln served as a Private in the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during World War II. Lincoln Ackerman was born in either Waterville, Lewis County, New York or New Hartford, Oneida County, New York. He enlisted in the US Army at Utica, New York on January 21, 1944. On this morning of 7 January 1945, the men of the 551st parachute battalion were next charged with taking the village of Rochelinval, Belgium, along the Salm River. While victorious in capturing Rochelinval and eliminating the last German bridgehead for over 10 miles (16 km) on the Salm River, the unit was virtually eliminated, having suffered more than 85% casualties.
