Jack Demsey FUNK, natif de Virginie fut le premier soldat tué pour la libération de Draguignan le 16 août 1944.
né en 1923, il est mobilisé en juin 1943 et se porte volontaire pour les parachutistes.
Après son entrainement, il est affecté au 551em bataillon aéroporté Américain, dans la compagnie B.
Le 15 aout 1944, vers 18h30 il est parachuté avec son unité sur la zone comprise entre La Motte, Les Arcs et Trans en Provence.
Avant le départ en Italie les officiers autorisent leurs hommes à sauter avec quelques objets personnels. Jack fut un des rares à avoir une requête particulière qui lui sera finalement accordé : sauter avec sa guitare !.
Hélas, il n'aura pas le temps de jouer avec ses camarades pendant les bivouacs. Le 16 Août au matin, le colonel JOERG
depuis son Poste de commandement du Château de Valbourgès ordonne à la compagnie B de couvrir le flanc droit de la vallée de la Nartuby. en début d'après midi les hommes essaient de prendre position mais se font repousser par des tireurs d'élites et deux nids de mitrailleuse.
Ce jour là, le lieutenant Erwin SHROEDER sera gravement blessé, et Jack FUNK sera mortellement blessé.
Son corps, inhumé en France jusqu'en 1968 sera rapatrié par la famille et repose depuis au cimetière de sa ville natale.

Jack Demsey FUNK was born in Virginia, town of Roanoke, on the 16 of january 1923 .
After school he was employed at the Norfolk and Western Railway Corporation at Roanoke locomotive shops
He enlisted in the army on the 26 of june 1943 and volunteer for paratroopers after parachute training was attached to B company of the 551st parachute infantry Battalion.
Jack D. FUNK made his jump in Southern France on the 15th of august 1944 near villages of La Motte and Trans en Provence at about 6.30pm.
In Italy, before took-off, Jack had already worked out a plan to carry his guitar, he worked with his brothers in arms of his platoon to carry his equipment. So he got it on the plane and jumped with it. His favorite song was ‘The wreck on the Highway’ by Roy Acuff 1938.

“Prior to jumping in South France, several members of the 3rd Platoon asked me if one of their guys could jump with his guitar. They had already worked out a plan to carry his equipment among themselves. I told them to go ahead with their plan and see how far they could get with the guitar, and they got it on the plane and the man jumped with it.” *
* According to veteran Emory Albritton, that man was Pvt Jack Funk.
After a defense position near battalion HQ château Valbourges, B company wait to air supply about 10am on the 16th and moved on the way north to secure and control main road to Draguignan on both flanks.
Medical repport of the 16th of august mention one man killed on hill 115. Same day Lieutenant Shroeder was seriously wounded .
Jack D. FUNK was one of the first paratrooper of the 551st parachute infantry Battalion in the soil of France.
He was postumous awarded of purple heart. After been burried in the landing zone area on the first days of the invasion, was moved to Draguignan Rhone cemetery and in 1968 his family requested his boddy sent back to Roanoke and burried at Copper Hill , Floyd county, Virginia USA .
Jack was the oldest son of 7 chidren, 4 of his brothers were went to war world two.

Il était le fils ainé d'une fratrie de 7 enfants dont 5 d'entres eux furent mobilisés et participèrent au second conflit mondial.

This page dedicated to Jack could be finished like that, but after sending this article to our friend Eric Buchanan from the 551st association, grand son of Les MEADE, we just all together realised that Eric grand father was medical section of the battalion and was the man who came to Jack just after he was shot on that day trying to save his life.
By destiny, Eric live close to Jack FUNK grave. On the next day, he drove to his grave with his guitar, a stars and stripes flag and red roses to pray for him. Thankyou Eric.
L'hommage à Jack aurai pu s'arrêter là, mais à la parution de cet article, notre ami Eric BUCHANAN, petit fils du vétéran du 551em Les MEADE nous réalisâmes en lisant le rapport de ce 16 aout que ce fut son grand père, membre de la section médicale qui fut le premier envoyé sur les lieux. Ce fut donc son grand père qui essaya de porter secours à Jack FUNK quand il fut mortellement blessé.
Et par le plus pur des hasard, Eric habite tout près du cimetière ou Jack est enterré. Quelques heures plus tard, il pris sa guitare, le drapeau des Etats Unis , et quelques roses rouges pour aller se recueillir sur la tombe de Jack et nous faire parvenir les photos de sa tombe et le lieu ou il repose.
