John Henry De Beer, a South African seconded to the British Army, joined the Ist Indep Para Platoon, the pathfinder unit of 2nd Indep
Para Bde in Italy in the beginning of 1945 as one of its last batch of reinforcements. When the Platoon disbanded in UK in the late summer of 1945, he joined its parent unit, 21st Indep Para Coy,
with which he served in Palestine until his secondment ceased on 29 Dec 45.
He was released from service with South African forces on Ist May 46. It is not known which units John served with before joining the Platoon, but it is known that he had been wounded in the
right leg.
In civilian life, John worked with the South African Iron and Steel Corporation as Cost Accountant and later Personnel Officer. We have recently learnt, with sadness that John
died in South Africa on 30 Sept 81, aged 59. It is regretted that we were unable to trace John earlier, but we shall remember him as a friendly, efficient and loyal officer who had the respect
and affection of all those who served with him. Our sincere condolences are proffered to his family.

l'armée britannique, a rejoint le Ier Indep Para Platoon, l'unité d'éclaireurs du 2e Indep Para Bde en Italie au début de 1945 comme l'un de ses derniers renforts. Lorsque le peloton s'est
dissous au Royaume-Uni à la fin de l'été 1945, il a rejoint son unité mère, le 21e Indep Para Coy, avec lequel il a servi en Palestine jusqu'à la fin de son détachement le 29 décembre 45.
Il a été libéré du service dans les forces sud-africaines le 1er mai 46. On ne sait pas avec quelles unités John a servi avant de rejoindre le peloton, mais on sait qu'il avait été blessé à la
jambe droite.
Dans la vie civile, John a travaillé avec la South African Iron and Steel Corporation en tant que comptable des coûts et, plus tard, responsable du personnel. Nous avons appris, avec tristesse,
que John est décédé en Afrique du Sud le 30 septembre 81, à l'âge de 59 ans. Il est regrettable que nous n'ayons pas pu retrouver John plus tôt, mais nous nous souviendrons de lui comme d'un
officier amical, efficace et loyal qui avait le respect et l'affection de tous ceux qui ont servi avec lui. Nos sincères condoléances sont présentées à sa famille.
