Lt. Col. Gordon LIPPMAN enlisted in the Army on 19 March 1943 at Los Angeles, California. He served with the 517th Parachute Regiment in the ETO as Platoon Sgt. of the machine gun Platoon, 1st Brigade HHC His unit served in Italy, Southern France, the Ardennes-Alsace, and in Germany. The 517th fought during the Battle of the Bulge at Soy and Hotten. During this service period he was awarded two Bronze Stars.
After his his Honorable discharge as Platoon Sgt. May 13 1945 he received his battlefied commission to 2nd Lt. on the same date.
He served in Korea as Capt. of Company A with the 24th Infantry Regiment and was wounded twice. During this time He received two Silver Stars one of which was upgraded to the DSC for his actions at the crossing of the Hant' an River, Korea.
Le lieutenant-colonel Gordon Lippman s’est enrôlé dans l’armée le 19 mars 1943 à Los Angeles, en Californie. Il a servi avec le 517e régiment de parachutistes dans le theatre d'Opération en Europe en tant que sergent du peloton de mitrailleuses, première brigade HHC. Son unité à servi en Italie, dans le sud de la France, dans les Alsace Ardennes et en Allemagne. Le 517th combattit lors de la bataille des Ardennes à Soy et Hotten. Au cours de cette période de service, il a reçu deux medailles " bronze star".
Il fut démobilisation en tant que sergent de peloton le 13 mai 1945,et nommé au grade de second Lieutenant à la même date.
Il a servi en Corée avec le grade de capitaine commandant de la compagnie A du 24e régiment d’infanterie et a été blessé deux fois. Pendant ce période, il a reçu deux médailles "Silver star" dont l’une a été élevée au DSC pour ses actions lors de la traversée de la rivière Hant’an, en Corée.
On 16 September 1965, he was assigned to duty in Viet Nam where he served as the executive offier of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Lai Khe, RVN.
During the night of 11 December 1965, several Viet Cong snipers infiltrated the perimeter of his camp. Lt. Col Lippman tried to personally locate the snipers, and while moving across an open area when he was shot and killed.
Le 16 septembre 1965, il est affecté au Viet Nam où il sert comme officier exécutif de la 3e brigade de la 1re division d’infanterie à Lai Khe, RVN.
Dans la nuit du 11 décembre 1965, plusieurs tireurs d’élite Viet Cong se sont infiltrés dans le périmètre de son camp. Le lieutenant-colonel LIPPMAN a essayé de localiser personnellement les tireurs d’élite et, alors qu’il se déplaçait dans une zone dégagée, il fut abattu par ces tireurs d"élites.

Message: Fascinating stories! The liberation of Southern France was a success in spite of all the bad drops, missed steps, constant challenges, and, sadly, some bad command decisions. To the men and women of Provence who stepped up at great risk to their own lives, and the men of the 1st Airborne Task Force who jumped through the early morning fog, congratulations for doing your part to turn the tide of this awful war! Their descendants have much to be grateful for. Keep these legacy stories alive! We can learn much from history !
