Cyril Peter HEYGATE, The King's Regiment, circa 1941
Cyril Peter HEYGATE was born on March 3, 1918, in Fletton, Peterborough, England. His father being a real estate developer, he will spend his childhood constantly moving to the four corners of England. He spent his school career changing regularly, first in Harrow, in the suburbs of London, then in Aldro and finally at Brighton College, on the south coast, on the edge of the Channel.
On September 27, 1939, he enlisted as a private in the Royal Fusiliers. After two months he decided to join the 164 Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU), an officer school located in Colchester. On March 9, 1940, he was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to "The King's Regiment". He then joined the infantry training school in Formby, where he commanded his section for 8 months. On October 21, 1940, he was assigned to the 70th Battalion in Wilmslow, on June 28, 1941 to the 8th Battalion in Banbury, where he was promoted Captain. He spent ten days in the 7th Battalion and was finally sent back to the 8th Battalion.
On March 6, 1943, Cyril HEYGATE was transferred to the Parachute Regiment, and will follow his airborne training for a month. Adjutant at the 4th Parachute Battalion. He embarked at the end of April 1943 for North Africa, and landed with the 1st Airborne Division in the Taranto harbor on September 9, 1943.
He will be one of the rare man of the 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade to have the chance to return to England where he will serve within the Airborne Forces Depot, from December 1943 to March 1944. His service within this organizational unit will earn him promotion to Staff Captain in the brand new 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade, separated from the 1st Airborne Division to keep a contingent of paratroopers in Italy.

Details on the role of this unknown rank, the Staff Captain:
"A Staff Captain is an officer of the military staff or general staff (also called army staff, naval staff or air staff within individual services). Its role is command and control through the planning, analysis and collection of information, as well as the transmission, coordination and supervision of the execution of the Brigade's plans and orders, in particular in the event of an emergency. 'simultaneous and rapidly changing multiple complex operations.It provides a multi-directional flow of information between a commander, subordinate military units and other stakeholders.'
Captain Cyril HEYGATE held this important role in the 2nd Brigade until 1947. He served during Operation DRAGOON in the South of France, Operation MANNA in Greece and in Palestine from the end of 1945.

He is quoted for his participation during Operation DRAGOON in August 1944 in a report by Brigadier PRITCHARD:
“The first wave of planes carrying supplies for the Brigade flew over the area in the morning, dropping the containers from a height which in some cases exceeded 2000 feet, consequently the supplies were dispersed and dropped over a wide area; this made collecting them extremely difficult, but a rescue party was organized under Staff Captain HEYGATE, and by the afternoon a divisional supply depot had been set up next to the LZ. ”

On his return to civilian life, Cyril worked in the family business Heygate & Son, in property development, in Middlesex. He left his job and became a farmer until the end of his life.
He will have four children with his wife Hilda May, two boys and two girls.
He died in 1975.

Le 06 mars 1943, Cyril HEYGATE est transféré au Parachute Regiment, et va suivre son entraînement aéroporté durant un mois. Adjudant au 4th Parachute Battalion. Il embarque fin avril 1943 pour l’Afrique du Nord, et débarque avec la 1st Airborne Division dans le port de Taranto le 9 septembre 1943.
Il sera un des rares hommes de la 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade à avoir la chance de retourner en Angleterre où il servira au sein du Airborne Forces Depot, de décembre 1943 à mars 1944. Son service au sein de cette unité d’organisation va lui valoir la promotion au poste de Staff Captain au sein de la toute nouvelle 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade, séparée de la 1st Airborne Division afin de garder un contingent de parachutistes en Italie.
Précisions sur le rôle de ce grade méconnu, le Staff Captain :
"Un Staff Captain est un officier d’état-major militaire ou état-major général (également appelé état-major de l'armée, état-major de la marine ou état-major de l'air au sein des services individuels). Son rôle est le commandement et le contrôle par la planification, l'analyse et la collecte d'informations, ainsi que par la transmission, la coordination et la supervision de l'exécution des plans et ordres de la Brigade, en particulier en cas d'opérations complexes multiples simultanées et évoluant rapidement. Il fournit un flux d'informations multidirectionnel entre un commandant, des unités militaires subordonnées et d'autres parties prenantes.”
Le Capitaine Cyril HEYGATE tiendra ce rôle important dans la 2nd Brigade jusqu’en 1947. Il sert lors de l’opération DRAGOON dans le Sud de la France, l’opération MANNA en Grèce ainsi qu’en Palestine à partir de fin 1945.
Il est cité pour sa participation lors de l’opération DRAGOON en Août 1944 dans un rapport du Brigadier PRITCHARD:
“La première vague d'avions transportant le ravitaillement pour la Brigade a survolé la zone dans la matinée, larguant les conteneurs d'une hauteur qui dans certains cas dépassait 2000 pieds, par conséquent les fournitures ont été dispersées et larguées sur une large zone ; cela a rendu leur collecte extrêmement difficile, mais une équipe de sauvetage a été organisée sous la direction du capitaine d'état-major HEYGATE, et dans l'après-midi, un dépôt de ravitaillement divisionnaire avait été installé à côté de la LZ.”
A son retour à la vie civile, Cyril travaille dans l’entreprise familiale Heygate & Son, dans la promotion immobilière, dans le Middlesex. Il quitte son travail et devient fermier jusqu’à la fin de sa vie.
Il aura quatres enfants avec sa femme Hilda May, deux garçons et deux filles.
Il meurt en 1975.
